I recently came into possession of this antique hunting knife from eBay. The previous owner knows nothing about it. It appears hand forged with a leather stacked handle and a brass bolster and hilt. The bolster is a band of brass filled with lead. And the hilt is hollow and filled with lead. It was heat treated in a forge. I can tell because I am a knife Smith and the color of the metal and the areas that we're heated indicates that it was. There are no markings or stamps anyware visible. I have never seen a blade stopped in with lead like this. Any help identifing it and getting a relative age of it is appreciated greatly thanks.

That is one cool looking blade. I know that in some books of "do-it-yourself" blade making there are instructions on making blades from old saws and such....I wonder if this is one of them?

It is possible I know that repurposed saw blade knives are a pretty modern trend. Not to say that it wasn't done before hand but I think the number of blade made from saws back in the day is pretty small. Plus the blade is extremely high carbon wich isn't consistent with most saw blades.

You didn't offer the dimensions, but I see what is likely a late 19thc Swedish or German 'Bowie-type' hunting knife. :icon_scratch:

Nice find,
Dave
