I found this (presumably) cast iron amphora at a thrift store for $12 and decided to take a chance on it. Age has worn away much of its design.

(Sorry for the dark photos)

Any ideas about its age or origin?

I don't have a trained eye for this stuff but to me it looked old enough to auto buy for the price I paid. Hopeful to find out more.

You say this is "iron"... did you test this theory with a common magnet ? ? ?

Also... I am unable to enlarge photos for some reason.... prompt displays but nothing happens.

Thanks - no attraction with a magnet.

I will try to provide larger photos while being careful not to stretch the page out.

That's a cool piece.
Pretty sure it's pottery though.

Book Zach... I will say this... IMO you had a great eye and picked a really nice "something"... it appears to be very old and would be willing to bet its worth a whole lot more than the 12 dollars you paid for it.

Perhaps another user here with more expertise in potteries can help this along further.

Good luck.

PS... to me this looks like a late Roman Amphora.

Thank you AARC! (and Arfie as well)

I don't have the proper vocabulary for this piece, and as such, hit a dead end with it so far.
