I have had this device in my possession for about 7 years and it has been looked at by many antique dealers and I have taken it to a couple antique shows but no one has a definite answer as to what it is and so they cannot tell me its value....I just would like to know what it is for sure because I dont intend to get rid of it....The inside image is of a lady and the design around her head is worn on one side which makes you think someone has rubbed that area many times in order to make the pattern fade away as it has... The statue on the top is of a boy holding a water container and it appears he has a cap on his head and a shawl of some sorts around his shoulders and down one side.. The head under the dish appears to be a lion and there are four rings which probably held somthing in them....The statue and the dish stand right at 13 inches tall and the dish is about 7.50 inches across... I am sure that it is bronze rather then brass because of the magnetism....Please let me know if you are pretty sure as to how old it is and what its purpose was....Thank you very much----Vianne Falcon

That's what I was gonna say. Ha-ha-ha, lol, yeah sure I was! Sounds like a winner to me.

Maybe it's for holding baptism water . They make baptismal spoons for sprinkling the h2o on the little ones head . Whatever it is it's beautiful !

french something

Ir the hollow base goes all the way up and exits at the urn the nymph is holding I think it is some kind of small fountain. Monty

To my eye the workmanship between the figure and the base don't match up. Could it have been added later. And it appears that the head of the tiger or what ever animal has been repaired. It may have started out life as something else.
Just observations. Can you anwser those questions?

It does seem an odd—no, make that wildly eclectic— marriage of motifs: wicker-weave border and vine/floral patterns on the top; Greek key border and shells on the base; classical figure with ewer (perhaps Hebe) above, and an animal's head below, etc.

but yet PBK the greek design matches tp edge and bottom of pedestal????

If it is magnetic ,it is either bronze plated steel or iron or one of the modern alloys containing nickel, manganese,or cobalt. Ordinary bronze is non-magnetic.
