Well the cold snap that we have been going through seems to have let up so we got in the water Sunday for a little splash. Bob got the find of the day, the second Westerwald "Georgius Rex" this season. A fantastic find despite the small chip in the rim.

Westerwald

He also got a nice embossed crockery bottle that we are still researching so if you have any info on the bottler "JOS. SIMPSON" I would love to hear from you.
I managed just a handful of clay pipe bowls and some milks. Oh well I guess I will have to keep on diving so I can find one of those little jugs for myself.
Is any one else getting out these wintry days or are we the only fools in the water?

Gorgeous stuff. I have two Westerwald pieces, one with the GR. There are pros out there who can restore these. I used to once upon a time ago, but have lost that skill.

Sure would look good all cleaned up, I love these little jugs but I am still not sure what there purpose was. I have heard that they may have been used for condiments or olives or as bear jugs. Any ideas?

What you are finding is awesome. I definitely like the jug and the embossed clay ginger beer-type containers. Have you ever found any of the latter embossed with a date?

Thanks there SDer, yes we do get them with dates but they are rare indeed. Here is a beer bottle from a Boston bottler I got a few years back up here in Halifax. "J.P. Plummer, 1853" :occasion14:

Thank You. Am not sure how common dated botttles are. I dug a earthen brown clay beer which is dated 1848. The dump dated from 1845-1851. It also included a white ceramic French mustard jar, supposedly bottled by the French government. Haven't seen anything like it posted or published in many years.

That's fantastic Southern Digger, sometimes those dumps sites can really produce. I have been inspired by Jgas here on TN to try some privy digging so I built a couple of probes and now all I have to do is wait for the ground to thaw out. So for now I will still bottle dive. We are hoping to get out on Sunday but the weather is looking really ify right now.
