not sure, but it looks like the latch that would go on a wooden gate. The real simple kind you would put on from home depot or something, just a really old one.

Definitely part of a latch, but I would imagine it could be from a door as well as a gate.

Funny, I found a similar, though not identical, piece recently.

Hi, Nice Find. I believe that is part of an old mortise door lock. They were the kind that were set into the door itself and used a skeleton type key. It looks too solid to be a gate latch as many of that type were of pressed metal not cast like this one. Also looking at it, this would be a dead bolt type of lock as it's not beveled to allow the door to close. Many mortise locks had these as well for extra security. Ebay has many on display if you care to look at them . Keep up the good work.. Midnightguy
