Yes, its a 17th C Token - Brass Farthing from Plymouth, Devon. I assume you're not far away, as these tokens don't tend to travel far. (Its actually my Birth Town)

PS. I will try & get a full ID, as these have a persons name & trade associated with it (& I think I see a date 166?), but that side is nearly toast.

Called in a favour from an expert on these & the full ID is:

Obv; Abraham Applebee around a ship.

Rev: Of Plymouth 1666 around A above AM
Williamson/Dickinson 238

These are a good find in my books, they are scarce, but not only that they are amoungst the very few pieces that we get of social history that pins down a persons name, date, location, & job. In this case its likely that the owner was a Pub landlord - ie. 'The Ship'. So its a beer token!!!

I grew up in Torpoint, but too young to remember it.

You can't get much more local than this. It might be a bit of a project for you to research if there was a 17th C Pub called 'The Ship'. Lots of these have the profession on them, like 'Grocer' but the picture in the centre part (if not a professions arms/shield) is mostly good guess work. In this case a pub makes perfect sense, if half your punters are sailors & your a major port.
