Got a toasted coin out of an old ball field that used to be farm land.

Only slightly larger than a V Nickel. Can see edge of it on one part of coin. Nothing else i do reveals any stamping etc. dont want to go crazy removing the crust like i did with the V nickel. (Ruined that but it was toasted to begin with.)

Any ideas on what it is or what to do? If its garbage, so be it.

It is unusual to get that much rust on a coin. Could it be a slug from something like an electrical box.

As soon as the wife stops dragging me around shopping ill clean it up today. The item is actually pretty dang flat except for the rust clumps.

Susan i have a 20 yr old coin thats brass over steel... Its toasty as hell too.

Yes, I'm quite good at crusty coins - brown crust, black crust, sand crust and white crust. Just not rust crust. But it could be a surprise. Dug a coin with a thick brown crust, so I thought it was a disintegrating zincoln. I gave it a soak in lemon juice and nearly fell over when it turned out to be a seated dime.

I brushed gently and letting it soak. Been busy. It honestly looks pewter underneath but its flat on both sides.

Ill post picture later. Most of the corrosion is gone after a soak. It appears pewter but smells like steel. i know that smell anywhere, from work ha. On one side in roughly the center is an 1/8th inch straight line of rust. Could that be a button shank? There are also straight line marks randomly on it, not incurred from me as i did not gouge the item (they were revealed after crud fell off.)

Ideas?

First picture has the center mark i mentioned. Thinking it was a button.
