Before I post the picture, is it OK to be asking here about the hallmarks? I am not registered at the other silver forums site, although that isn't too hard to do.
I want to list these. I am not sure who the hallmark is.
Thanks so much for your help. You guys are so smart in the hallmarks! ~ Leah
These do not appear to be silver. They appear to be pewter and when polished up, can look similar to silver. From what I can find, they were made by The Stieff Company in 1923. The one on the left in the picture (I can't see the one on the right), has the numbers 9 5 on it. That would be the item number. It appears that the left one in the photo has had someone tamper with it at some time and added the number 2 between the numbers 9 and 5 to try to make it look like it's sterling silver. You can see that the number 2 don't come close to matching the style and impression type of the other two numbers and was added later by someone other than Stieff. There might be more info out there but hopefully this will point you in the right direction.
But the other mark is almost, but not quite right. I see three cross marks on item, but only two on chart. Am I seeing the picture correctly? Maybe a extra cross mark added too?
these are earrings made from the electroforming process. they are most likely israeli circa 1980s-present. they are made by first creating a base in the shape of the desired object. usually the base is resin. the base, through the electroforming process, is then covered with a thin layer of silver. fine detail is not really possible on these pieces and they often have a "puffy" appearance. they are also deceptively light (solid silver earrings of similar shape and design will be much heavier). so it is indeed real sterling silver--but just a shell over another lightweight material.
