I did two short hunts this weekend on the next field. Was digging the deep weak targets as there is not much left and once again was surprised at the great finds. Most targets jump around the VDI and are 6”-10” deep. The lead finds, a glob that may have been a hole filler in wooden beams possibly, I have found this same type of glob over the area several times, it served a purpose. A swan’s head, a lead button which I have several of the same. Two musket balls and a lead seal with a sheep and the initials AF on the reverse.
A lion’s head facing right with my signature on the reverse, I hit it with the shovel perfectly in the middle. Three buttons, two may be British, right is stamped “GILT BIRMINGHAM” and lower middle says “GILT”.
Five coins, 1924, 1920, 1874, 1874, 1931.
Another small cockerel tap valve for a keg 400-500 years old in excellent condition. I found one last week just 50’ from here.
I was surprised to pull this seal matrix up just 60’ from where I found the one last week. This one looks to be lead and has started to disintegrate as it has many cracks over it. Thought it might be a thick patina but I doubt it so I will treat it with some preservative and leave it alone.
This seal is probably around 300-400 years old. The stamp has some crust build up on it and is hard to make out what it is. I thought it would be an Italicized initial but looks more like a design of sort. I do not know what it is and welcome any ID help. The picture is not mirrored so the image is backwards and this is what you see looking at the seal.
This is the image the seal made into some clay. It could be upside down. Old style German writing and alphabet is much different than it is today. HH, Mike
