Another question for cache hunters.

I will be hunting my father-in-laws old house and land this summer.
The land was signed over by Pres. Buchanan in 1859. They still have the original land grant. The original foundation is still there with a newer house on top of it. There were several hundred plus year old oaks that were knocked over by Katrina. There is also an old smokehouse near the original house and an old barn about 100 yards from the house.

My question is, in what area has it been your experiences that people
would most likely hide a cache?

I am also relatively brand new at MDing. I am leaning toward getting aesoro, but any other suggestions would be appreciated. I know
these posts can get redundant so if you can give me a link for a
an information post I would appreciate it.

Thanks for all the input. If any of you ever have a question about
coin roll hunting, just ask, I'll be glad to help. ::)

The nature of your question is why you did not get any replies.

You want a link to an information post about caches? If I gave you a link to a place to look for caches by it's very nature it would be redundant.

People would add information and repeat information. Based on what the responders think is important.

Caches can be anywhere. Under trees, beside trees in between trees. Under flat rocks, in the center of 3 rocks. By landmarks of any kind.

Some people would say to research the history of the people who lived there and study their habits.

Some people would say it has to be close to the house for quick retrieval. Others would insist it has to be where no one could see the person burying it.

It has to be in an easy to remember place so look at all buildings and landmarks. Where was the outhouse? Where was the well?

Is their any depressions in the ground?

Give us something to go with and you will get answers.

Kickstart,

If the cache was hidden in the house, it is gone (since the old house is no longer there). People would hide money under a loose board in the floor, under the stairs (two story houses), or in the large stair post at the bottom of the stairs.

If it was stashed outside, it was usually within eye-sight of the bedroom, so they could keep an eye on it. A post hole was common for this.

Another popular place was the chicken house. If anyone tried to nose around that area, the chicken's noise would alert the farmer.

These are just a couple of ideas, there are many books on the subject. If you would like a recomendation, give me a PM.

Take care,

I have been doing the same thing with a property we have here.
Timberwolf is correct,
I found two small caches here so far, One was in line with the master bedroom at the corner of the barn where a chicken coop used to be, another was just off the corner of the original house. Just under the main bedroom window.

Both were in an old Mason type jar and one predated the other by almost 50 years. This could be figured by the dates on the coins.

Thanks for the information. I'm going to wait until
the fall to search. The home is in South Ms. and my
MIL says the heat is almost too much. The house and property
is on roughly 60 acres.I will let you know if I find anything.

Kickstart,

I don't know why I told you to PM me for a book recomendation...
I have no problem giving you that on the open forum. I thought I had a book on cache hunting specificly, but I don't.
What I recomend for treasure hunting in general are these:

Treasure Hunter's Manual #6, by Karl Von Mueller
Treasure Hunter's Manual #7, by Karl Von Mueller
Wybills to El Dorado, by Karl Von Mueller
The Coinshooters Manual, by Karl Von Mueller
Encyclopedia of Buried Treasure Hunting, by Karl Von Mueller
The Owlhooter's Manual, by Deek Gladson
Treasure Hunt for Fun and Profit, by Michael Paul Henson
Directory of Buried or Sunken Treasures and Lost Mines of the U.S., by Thomas Penfield
Buried Treasure of the United States, by Robert F. Marx
The WPA Guide to 1930's (of your state)

These are just a part of my personal library. Hopefully there is something here to get you started in the right direction. Some of these may be out of print, I haven't checked.

Tom,

I have been going after this place for about four years now with a little success here and there.
No need to brag.
Just enjoy the hobby,

Kind of cool tho.
Never met anyone who could metal detect and find things and worry at the same time.

Kickstart,

Good information is always welcome.
When you get the ball rolling ....
Let me (all of us) know if the info helped.

If the info you obtain by actual accomplishment turns out different...
We would like to hear that also.

Good Hunting !

Hey Old Dog,

You lost me on this one ??? Course I am getting older. Maybe it is obvious, and I just can't see the forest, for the trees :D

Tom,

I find that when things start to show up with the detector. you will be so concentrated on what you are finding to worry about anything but what you are doing.
