I'm guessing British during the Crimean war. They appear to have a badge on their sash which has a crown which appears to me to look like a Queen Victoria era one. Her crown was like the classic "queen of hearts" crown bulging out at the top.

I Have Seen A British Comisary Officers Uniform From The ZULU War Period, That Looks Like Those, With The Exception The One I Saw had a Cap instead of The Bear Skin Hat. trk5capt...

Thats gonna be a hard one to pin down. But I'd say Prussian Cavalry Battle dress. Not Dress uniforms. So many Units made their own uniforms back then. The reason I say Cavalry is the belts worn high across the shoulder to support the sword Frog while riding, but not designed for use when walking. Hence they are all holding their swords in the picture. The beards look British, and the Picture looks american civil war...This one has me fooled.
Dano.

Dano brings up a good point about the height of the belts. I'm figuring it would have to be an English speaking nationality, due to the "Cabinet Portrait" (in English) at the bottom. It looks like the bottom has been cropped (unevenly) which is too bad, as there probably have been a photographers name on the bottom. Thomas & Odell were popular photographers for this type of thing around 1890. Beyond that, I've got nothin'.

Your right NH. I think the time line would be closer to early 1800's. It's so hard to tell because most of the uniform pics youll find are Dress Uniforms and not battle dress. This is gonna take some hands on library search. And yes I do want to figure this out.

I would also say British during the Crimean war. The headgear is the "Bearskin" still worn by the British Royal Honor Guard. Send this to someone in GB and I'm sure they will be able to confirm or not. HH

I put this one to a Aussie Military history forum and the concensus is this:

They are officers, British (or Canadian Militia - see below) and members of a Rifle regiment. The fur hats (probably muskrat - believe it or not) suggests they are serving in Canada.

So, either the Rifle Brigade (Brit Army - the Guelphic crown on the pouch belt plate is a good indicator) during one of the 95th's sojourns in Canada or a local Canadian Militia regiment with uniform modelled on that of the 95th. I am sort of leaning towards the latter as the frogging on the jackets doesn't look quite right for the RB.

The crown atop the badge is the Guelphic Crown which was also used during Victoria's reign. This was Albert's (Victoria's husband) Crown. Prince Albert was a German, and this crown is the crown of the Dukes of the House of Hanover, of which he was a member, as were the British Royal family. Victoria and Albert both had the surname, Sax-Coburg-Gotha, and they were first cousins.

They are not cavalry as the shape of the sword is incorrect and as each of them has a whistle on their pouch belt this is another indicator for infantry. An example of the pouch belt worn by the Rifle Brigade may be found here http://www.dhk.co.uk/mad/vicstroll/riflecorps/pouchandsabretache.jpg - its identical to the ones shown above. The Rifles work dark green uniforms with black facing which also fits.

Good Luck.

Thanks Harry , you got it right . I carefully lifted the old piece of newspaper that is pasted on the back enough to reveal some writing . It's written lightly in pencil and says : 8th royal rifle and seems to have the names of the men , and possibly their rank . I found an old hat box in the abandoned house I've been searching with lots of old photos in it . It's the same place where I found the ''bullet cache'' . I appreciate everyones help .
