Another misc day but one of those "quarter" hits was a big surprise.

A very clear, loud 86! Just another quarter...NOT!

Not in great shape but I wouldn't be either If I'd been buried for that long! LOL

My eyes can't make out much, I'll leave it to you guys to decide which one it looks like.

Thanks for peeking!

Your coin is a large cent! One side has the words “one cent“ and a wreath around it. The other side has lady liberty facing left! I was actually able to see the beginning of the date below the bust. “18” but I can’t seem to make out the last two digits! But eighteen hundreds is eighteen hundreds! Sweet find!

Here is one of mine for reference!

Yes, it's a Large Cent - they stopped minting them in 1857.

Large Cents come in on the exact same target ID numbers as Quarters - on both my Deus and my E-Trac.
So, I would think that they come in the same way on most or all other mfg. of detectors.

There are several ways to clean copper coins - be sure you do some research on the subject before proceeding - it can't be undone !

Having seen your posts for quite a while, I know I don’t have to explain to you it’s a largie. But the year can only be broken down to series probably. Great job scratching out that high signal

Thanks Scrappy,

Yeah, I should've been more clear in the request. I knew it was a large cent of course. But, I also know that the date range can sometimes be identified by which liberty head, matron, hairstyle, facing left/right. I'll attempt some minor cleaning to see if I can get any more detail.

Thanks to everyone for all the help!

That would be a nice surprise if you're at a site littered with clad and that largie turns up. Both quarters and large cents give a nice clean 95 VDI on my Deus in all directions unless they are deep, on edge or next to iron. On Monday I was at a site where I have dug a number of large cents and got a perfect 95 in all directions. Sure enough it was a large cent! Would have been very disappointed if it had been a clad quarter.

It looks like a braided hair to me but it might help highlight the profile if you use one of those led lights. I think with some good magnification you could probably get a date. electrolysis might reveal more of it too. I've never done it but seen some really good results on here.

If it helps you out, her head is positioned farther to the right than mine! So I’m assuming an earlier date!

Congratulations on a nice oldie!! Wow!!

Just in case any might be holding their breath. No dice on the copper. I tried. Best I could do is to maybe get an 18"36". Wish I could find some ground that doesn't eat copper! :dontknow:

Congrats on the old copper! :occasion14:

Sweet find you must have followed the scent lol Looks like a good day for you... Many more to come my friend
