Metal Detecting
Hi all!

I've always been interested in history (mostly Roman occupied Britain, but since I live in Northern Illinois....), and have been wanting to try metal detecting. I've recently begun hunting for arrowheads with my kids in freshly plowed cornfields. To date, I've found some pottery shards, but no intact arrowheads yet. Would anyone mind sharing with me good places to look in my area (either northern Illinois or Southern Wisconsin). The other thing that I was wondering...does anyone know of a metal detecting club that would have "loaners"? I'd really love to give this hobby a try with a friendly group that could show me the ropes so that I could learn what exactly it is I want before making an investment.

Welcome to the forum and hobby. You are on the right track with finding a local club for members to teach you the ropes and about the detectors. If you can also find a local dealer they might have renters, but never loaners. Having a club member take you along and using one of their machines to learn which is best for you to use is great.

I would suggest that you do lots of reading at the manufactures web sites. There is no one detector that does it all well, but some advertise theirs as doing just that. I've found these to be a comprmise on all modes and they only report the information differently.

Many here like the new Garrett ACE 250 at about $200.00. Contact Tony for a price and more info.

Artemis Moon,

Welcome to TNET. I have found the following website to be very helpful:
http://www.fmdac.org/
Utilizing that website, you can not only find hunt clubs in your area, but also the laws pertaining to different state parks.........very important.

Concur wholeheartedly with Sandman. And...I also am glad you are including your family. Nothing is more special than creating a family bond by including everyone in the hobby. Plus, it is a great way to teach the kids about our country's history.........hands on.

Congrats and welcome aboard!

Thanks to you all for the great ideas! I will definitely look at the recommended websites. This is a hobby that I really do want to share with my daughters. I feel it is so important to teach future generations about the past. I'd like my girls to have an appreciation of how people lived before the invention of the IPOD and the cell phone. Maybe they will learn a thing or two about history in a very tangible way. Are older children (mine are 9 and 14) generally welcomed into clubs??

Welcome to Tnet Artemis. :)
Trying to teach kids these days about life before Ipods and text messaging is an uphill struggle..I get the 'did you see dinosaurs?' question from my kids' friends.. ::)
It's great your girls are interested in hunting too.
Happy Hunting!

Goddess of the Moon,

I have seen children at the Midwest Historical Research
Society meetings.

But,

unless the child is interested I would not suggest that you
start them out at meeting. Lot of talk from the old "guys". May
turn them off.

have a good un.........
