another hot rock, I thought it was making my detector go nuts because of the saltwater but after soaking and drying it was still coming up as a solid 40 on my AT Pro. It feels like a piece of charcoal or graphite but lighter. non-ferrous

did a quick hardness test, wouldn't scratch my fingernail, but it isn't crumbling

Try a streak test. Looks like a piece of anthracite coal. "Clinkers" are what many call them in metal detecting and they will sound off on a detector. Not an uncommon find on the beach ;)
