Here's a re-enactors site that uses this button on their tunics Maybe it will help. Scroll down to the section covering tunics and click on the blue button description. It shows the same button as on the other two sites.

Every thing I find leads me to believe this is German and from the WWI era.

There is a crown in the centre and what looks like three or four letters below the crown. Not sure what it is but is definitely older than WWI.

I don't see a thistle...looks like three or four letters with a laurel leaf border...
