This site that I have been going to for the past three days has yielded some of the best metal detecting I have had. In another post I showed the first large cent I found as well as 3 Indian heads, shield nickel and others. I went back yesterday using some techniques I watched videos on with my at pro and pulled these items out of iron patches. It is a 1855 large cent, 1916 D buffalo, and 1919 Merc which is my oldest Merc I've found. Finding that silver was so refreshing since i hadn't found any at this site yet that as producing so much. I would love to find a barber or seated as the time period is there. Any tips or pointers on cleaning the site looking for deeper coins or masked coins? So far I've rinsed and rubbed the large cent and if it wasn't only my second one ever I'd probably try peroxide method. It seems solid to me but what do you all think? I'll probably let it soak in distilled water today and then use a tooth brush under water but that's it. More importantly after I do that, how do I preserve it from corroding further or do I need to? I've read about applying Vaseline but is that necessary since Im not removing the crud for the time being. I'd like to preserve it so that maybe one day I'll feel comfortable enough to peroxide it. Also notable is the military pin( note that it has a pin running parallel down backside) is any one able to date or identify this? And finally I found which seems too small to be a heel plate. Anyone recognize it ?

Sweet finds,I would keep going back until you can't get anymore! Happy hunting.

Just to clarify .... The cleaned LC is the first one I found at this site. I just rinsed it and toothpicked the crud off. What's remaining is the green lumps of corrosion.

The one I'm insure on how to approach is the 1855. The 1847 is cleaned

Back in the day, ladies used heel plates too.......... Nice finds!

I love your LC's, what coil were you using on your ATPro?

I find that preserving coins in a food saver vacuum sealer works very well. Nice LC!! Happy hunting.
