Metal Detecting
Hi guys,

A friend called me last night wanting me to check out a coworker's metal detecting find. I detect but I know ZERO about meteorites. I told him I would post here and hopefully get some direction. All I know is that it was detected and a magnet sticks to it. The shiny spot is where someone rubbed it, with what I don't know. Any clues?

Thanks in advance for your time and any advice for him.

I don't know Kent. Your photos are too distant to tell. Here is something that may help, though.

Someone apparently thought (wisely) that having a "window" on the stone would be a good idea. A "window" is a flattened area where the interior of the stone shows through. The window of the stone you show appears to be silver-gray in appearance, which I would rate as possible for being a meteorite.

The next thing you need to do is show detailed photos of the "window" so others can speculate on it. Your window appears to be about 1" x 2". If so, it should show rudimentary Widmanstatten diagrams. These will look like lines in the stone. Often the lines appear crossed, and do not appear as if they were formed together. Searching for Widmanstatten diagrams and meteorites should give you plenty of examples to go with.

Good luck!

Thank you Tuberale! I will let the owner know to try this. I appreciate your time and the info.
