We just got back from a 3 day trip to our favorite battlefield site. This is the same farm where I found a James shell in 2016. The circumstances were almost identical with the only exception being that this was one hay field over. I can't believe that I found one complete James shell in my lifetime but finding two is crazy! This shell was about 14" deep and I think it's in better condition than my first one. I was prepared this time. When I saw a small section of the "birdcage" in the bottom of the hole I knew what was about to come up and we got it on video. Our Video skills need work but at least we captured the moment.
Other CW items from this trip include some canister shot, a Sharps and an Enfield bullet, sabot, a big chunk of a James fragment and my first Hotchkiss fuse.
Some non-CW items were wheats and a WWI collar disc for the 153rd Ark Infantry.
...and now it's time to start that month long tedious task of restoring the shell.
