Found this solid brass item with near my trigger guard. Cleaned up pretty good. Has some remaining gold gilt. Part to something?

To play devils advocate, why would it be adorned with gold? If it was symmetrical, i would guess a hand guard for a sword/saber, as it looks like it is inletted for a blade and tang,but I guess it could be from a really nice stove

I put it on another site(oops!). Consensus it's part of a sword handle, the part that protects the hand.

I was going to suggest "gear shifter for a 10-speed bike" until you mentioned the gold gilt.
