Yep, they are US Army. They are called the great seal button. Made from 1903 to present.

Is there a backmark? They may be some kind of replacement Army buttons and not military issue.

There are no back marks that I can see even under magnification. But thank you so much for all your help.

As Bryanhashemi indicated, very-precise measurement of the buttons' diameter (in millimeters) is needed for certainty in identification. The Albert button-book lists only three sizes (28mm, 23mm, and 16mm) for GI-105 (1902-1910) and GI-102 (1910-to-present) Great Seal buttons which were actually issued by the US Army.

Also, Mr. Albert's book mentions the existence of ironback Confederate buttons specifically, by listing various ones as a tinned-iron-back (t.i.b.) button. But he does not mention any iron/steelback Great Seal buttons.

I suspect precise diameter measurements will give us a clue as to whether or not any of these three buttons are military-issue ones, or is a "Fashion" button.

I have my collection of Great Seal buttons here and I will try to measure them when I get a chance. :icon_thumright:

I have some steel back Great Seal military buttons in my collection but they have backmarks. I think they are galvanized. I have some unmarked Great Seal steel backs but I suspect they are not military issue. They have floppy shanks or cheap self-shanks. Can I see a better pic of the shank? a side view perhaps?
