I found this in a creek where I’ve found plenty of artifacts of all types. It’s a polished stone and is transparent when wet. Not now cause of the creek stain but you can see the swirls in the stone. Idk the stone type maybe a agate but not sure. Only one I’ve ever found like it. I took it to a artifact show a couple of years ago and was told it was a Charm Stone. The person that told me was one of the judges going around and authenticating the artifacts for the certificates for finds. He even told me where I found it which was really Erie (the area). It was found in a private creek where I have permission. Let me know what you think and stay safe if you are in the hurricane path. Just started pouring rain here with many lightning strikes. So far I’m north of it but never know.
Side view is blurry but you can see the depth.

I have about a third of a chunky stone I found somewhere I was going to show but can’t find it right now

i think it is just a cool pebble. Imagine trying to fabricate and polish such a small piece. If this is what you wanted to make, why use such an unremarkable stone to begin with?

I’m not sure on the pebble theory. The creek stones are quartz mainly but the other types are sediment stone, shale, schist and very little chert. Game stones were a big part of the culture in this area. I do have to ask, have you ever found a polished bead? I know you find beads in your area and they are small. Just referring to the size comment you made on this polished stone. Thanks for the comment

my thinking is that most game stones were just stones picked up based on size and shape, used and discarded or ignored. What would you do if you needed such items today? I would (and have), just looked around for any close by useful pebbles. I wouldn't bother manufacturing one.

The beads I find are all trade beads, and even though clay was readily available and literally ALL OVER, the folk in my area never had any pottery or items outside of Shoto figures.

undecided, but its nice looking.
I think it would be helpful to look at it under magnification to determine if any pecking or smoothing signs can be seen.

That’s a great idea. Idk how long it was in the creek but there is a show coming up and they usually have someone there with a scope that tells you what you have for a fee.
Someone I know said it looked like polished Soapstone which is a big possibility that I never thought of. Easy to carve and polish

I’m not saying it is this cause I still have to get it checked out but here is a some examples of some as small as 1 inch found in my area.

I posted a documentation for you. Every state is different. I know you have some beautiful stones where you live

I could go down to the river or over to the coast and pickup little rounded polished stones all day. Then drill a hole or notch no need to waste valuable time not sure if we had game stones?

You always find cool stuff. Thanks
Thanks, every once in a while I pull out the good stuff. I know not everyone finds it that’s why I don’t always share it. I try to stay average

I know a stone like that would be out of place around here, may be speaking out of my butt a bit but any chance it’s a gastrolith?

I’ve often thought that myself. But not many fossils here but it could of been carried in or traded. I only know of 1 dinosaur bone being found but that was 20 miles away from this find. It’s not something you see in my area as a natural stone

So I took my piece to the show and had Jerry Dicky look at it. He didn’t charge me cause he wasn’t sure. I guess he just does point’s and the popular artifacts idk. He did say they probably carried it in. Another longtime collector had some in his frames a couple but they were smaller. That collector said Charm Stone or possibly a pottery stone. So I take it as a 50/50 chance. I’m still keeping it in my frame of finds either way. Just letting you know the results. Thanks for the opinions
