Been looking at some whatsits in a box and I dug this a few years back in a Confederate cavalry camp. It's made of brass and plated with silver. It has two holes in the top and is definitely a lid of some sort as on the bottom it has the screw ridges for screwing it on. It has a patent on the top, but with all the damage all I can make out is "UN'S PAT JUNE 2 185" That's all I have available. At first thought a mason's jar lid of some sort, but it'd definitely a U and not an O. Wish it wasn't damaged and if I could make out the first word I could probably ID it. Also be aware the green label with writing is location and date information and just for my own, personal records. Thanks for the help!

Could it have been an inkwell lid?
Not sure I guess that's a possibility. Did they have inkwells that large? When I first dug it I thought it was an old mason jar lid from thee 1800's, cause it's about that exact diameter. I think the two holes in the top are a clue for what it is, but not sure. Maybe thread or something came out of the hole, I just really have no clue and wondered about this since I dug it.

When I saw the holes, I thought they could be for tightening or loosening with a spanner wrench.

Any idea how many letters in the first word? If so, you might try looking up scrabble words with that ending. A long shot might be to look for inventions patented on that date from 1850 to 1859.

Nope, no idea on how many would be in the first word. The metal is broken away and gone with the missing letters. Should be a patent record somewhere on it, but I haven't found anything. I did do a google search for each year looking for a match with lids, but couldn't come up with nothing. With it having a patent, it must have had some kind of special purpose to it, but I have no idea what it would be. I might try google patent search when I get a chance to see if they might have something on there. I know they list a ton of patents on there, found one of anther Civil War relic I have and even found my patent I received listed on there. lol

Being silver-plated brass should help narrow your search. Looking at the 2 holes, the first thing that comes to mind is where a handle once attached. Maybe part of a container or service set.
