Please tell me I'm right! Measures 0.73 inch, the same exact measurement as my 1790-1810 button. If I'm right, my horizons as far as places to search just got a whole lot brighter and broader. Am I right?

Depends on when you think the Colonial Era ended. To most Americans, that era stretched from the 1500s to 1776. Of the two button-form dating charts people post here, the one I believe is more accurate (posted below) says your cone-shank-with-embedded-wire-loop (which is missing) BRASS button dates from 1760 through 1785-90.

The reason behind that statement is I found that button on my Godfather's estate, which is absolutely huge and sprawling and I can come and go as I please. His house was built in 1903 so I didn't expect to find anything older than that...until I checked the apple orchard. Hunting season!

Well good luck to you, you have a late 18th C button which is a good sign.

Look for a heavy concentration of nails in a relatively small area-if you find that then a building was previously there. Dig a few of the nails and examine the shafts-if they have square shanks then the building was erected sometime in the 1700s; if the shanks are flat those are cut nails from the 1800s. There will likely be at least two structures; one will be the house and the other a barn, stable, etc. Good luck

I hate nails and I never hang onto them long enough to notice their shape, but I will pay more attention next time. I did notice a lot of nails in that area. Thanks for the tip.
