Found this on the beach yesterday in the same spot I found a nice Morrow Mountain last year. Can someone help with an ID? Thanks! 20190928_151739.jpg20190928_151715.jpg

I don't know that there's enough there to say for sure, but looks like a large, stemmed quartzite point so would likely be Savannah River or one of the related Late Archaic knife forms. I love how that base is thinned.

I agree with Arrow. A bit narrow to be a Savannah River. Like myself, it looks like it could use a shave!

I’d like to see the clean up.

Just my observations and speculation based on what’s left of the point:

I think Tdog’s designation of Holmes (also called Savanna River Narrow Stemmed) fits as well as (or maybe better than) Stemmed Guilford, due to the parallel (not tapered) stem section that is left intact on the one side. I believe I see distinct shoulders (although weak) on both sides.

It does have a “flattened cross-section” in the body, which is also in agreement a Holmes designation.

Another possible type is a HALIFAX. This is due to the observable flare (or ear) on the base of the stem. This detail may eliminate a Guilford Type altogether.

Both the HOLMES and the HALIFAX typically have off-set (asymmetrical) shoulders and are commonly made of Quartzite.

Just my two cents, for what it’s worth.

Thanks, everyone, for the input! I will try to post some cleaner pics this weekend. Fortunately, the beach I've been searching has alot of potholes and tree stumps that trap these points. Unfortunately...they come out looking pretty gnarly. I almost missed this one. It was crusted over with barnacles and oysters. Thanks again for the info!

Nice find! Hope you get a conclusive ID on it!
