Ancient Pottery Water Jug

Hello everyone, I just purchased this jug thinking it could have some age to it. It was supposedly recovered from Lake Isabal in guatemala. Would that make this a Mayan water jug of some sort? Im really not sure what this could be and was not able to find any similar jugs. It is corroded with minerals/organic material from its underwater resting place so its difficult to see the actual pot surface. Any help would be greatly appreciated in identifying this piece, thank you!

Seems unlikely anyone would have gone to that much effort for a water jug for a land-locked society in rain forests.

My first thought on it was Spanish Colonial. Shipwreck Spanish Colonial Pottery Jar & Plate Fragment (2).16th-17th century. New Spain.

Thank you all for the welcome and feedback! I believe it is a form of 16th or 17th century Olive jar but ill have to bring it to someone to get appraised just to know for certain. Perhaps Antiques Roadshow lol?

Welcome. I also think it is Spanish in origin and probably for olive oil. They are very desirable.

It looks like a pretty neat jug.

If it was on a ship,look for wear marks at the widest point on the jug.They would of been stacked side by side and the rocking of the boat would cause them to rub against each other causing the wear marks.
