I'm pretty sure it's not brass nor gold. It looks more like stone. But if you could look at the sides a little better, it looks kinda like wood maybe.

I'm with OD. Maybe a piece of old ceramic pottery or jug?. Looks like it got tumbled around in a river of rocks, sand and silt, for a few decades. I'm pretty sure it's not an ancient stone tool of any kind.

A size reference would be good also.

I think Old Digger is on the right tract.
It does have the look of old ceramic.
