That is a Byzantine Follis.....Note the large "M" on the reverse (2nd picture).? To the side of the M I can see ANNO running perpendicular (This means the year).? The year of the reign of the emperor does not appear to be visible to the right of the M
See WW Link for a similar example.

Note the "NIK" below the large "M".? This coin was minted in Nikomedia.

I realize this is a tad late, but I disagree - this does not resemble any Byzantine follis I have ever seen - however it DOES resemble Islamic coins. I would suggest asking some of the experts on ancient Islamic coins, as that writing is pretty clearly Islamic, not any western type.

The coin is clearly Byzantine. Please don't lead folks down the wrong path. The writing on the coin is latin, not Islamic.

I believe that part of the difficulty here is due to the rotation of the coin's reverse. I have corrected it in the center photo below, showing "ANNO" down the left side of a large "M." On either side of the coin are examples of Byzantine coins with similar reverses, as cited by Gunner. Also note that the one on the right displays the Nikomedia mintmark that he mentioned. I hope that this will help to clear up any misunderstandings.

Thanks for making it clearer for everyone PBK. I should have mentioned the odd rotation of the picture :). Nice work!

My intention in my response was to not allow digression to the wrong attribution. Oroblanco, no offense, but you've done this on at least one other occasion (insisting the Marcus Aurelius Sestertius [clearly identifyable by the distinct portrait of the emperor] was indeed a Septimius Severus in another thread).

If you read the replies you would note that I was not the only one who thought this one looked quite Arabic. As for the other example, I don't recall INSISTING the coin MUST be Septimius Severus. I will happily remove my offensive posts.

Oroblanco

They weren't offensive at all. Simply incorrect.
