Ancient Button?

Can anyone please help me ID this button or even the shield on the front of the button?

It is thick, heavy and the shank is very long. You can also see scratch marks on the back. In my opinion they are from being hand made.

Any opinions would be great.

Found in Germany near other Roman artifacts.

I agree it looks much more like a wax seal than a button. As for age, you need someone familiar with styles used in your area throughout history

Circa 14th C. Sometimes referred to as a 'chess piece' Seal Matrix.

With some carefully research & a good impression the Seal owners can be worked out from the inscription & the coat of arms in the centre will narrow it down. These bronze pieces were likely upper middle class, so a successful merchant is very likely.
