Found today at an old farm site. This is about as old as it gets around here. We dint get these things in the change from the liquor store like you guys on the least, I mean east, coast do. I have to settle for mercs, barbers, SLQ's, Walkers and such. After I found this nickel I stopped on the way home to buy some beer for my weekly lawn mowing chore and the guy at the store gives me a 64 dime in change! So the silver goods smiled on me anyway! May the gods of silver shine on you all! Rebel LT!

Thats a sweet nickle, I actually have a few, Thats about as old as it gets here also. Great shape also

looks to be 1866 to 1883 time frame shield type nickle -- sweet find can you make a year out on her?-- Ivan

Ivan. It is either an 1863 or 1865. I cant make out the last digit on the coin.

sorry looking at my "red book" of coins that type of 5 cent nickle was first made post civil war in 1866 -- so it can not be either a 1863 or 1865 -- it could be a 1866 or 1867 however -- that was the the years with both the "rays" and the stars -- after 1867 --there where only stars with no "rays" --- time for a olive oil soaking -- Ivan

Your coin could only be one of two possible years because of the "rays" on the back of the coin (the side w/o the date) It is either 1866 or 1867. If my eyes don't deceive me it's 1867. I'm about 99% sure. First year of the shield design was 1866 so it definately cant be any older than that. Here's a picture showing the difference between the "rays" version and the regular version. The picture also shows the values of the coin (2008 Red Book)

Thanks to Ivan and Evolution. It appears, now that I have looked at the thing under a lense for about twenty minutes, that it is an 1867. You guys are a wealth of information. Thanks again.

Good Find. Here in Tucson my oldest find is a 40s wheatie. Boy do I miss living in NY!!!!!!
