Have always regretted selling my Tesoro about 15 years ago .... but, I'm one of those that got the bug again with the "Diggers" series... Was always fun, but got out of it for health reasons - that have now resolved themselves... Retired 7/11 after 26 years as a Child Support Investigator and now have time and good health to, once again, sniff out some old stuff..

While browsing, I saw a post where the OP wondered what would happen to his forum with all of the 'newbies' joining becasue of the new TV series .... He asked "Should we help them??" .... I was (almost) a little offended, but I suggest letting time take it's toll - the wheat will separate from the chaff soon enough.. (And I promise I won't ask 'where to hunt',) but I do have a question regarding the new technology and upgrading my older Tesoro.. and .... a question regarding hunting on old property...

1. My 'almost there' decision is the Garrett Ace 350. Reasons are the videos I've seen on YouTube; The visual display vs my old "SquakBox" of a Tesoro.. and - it's in my price range.. :laughing7: Any comments that may point me in another direction??

2. I can't tell you how many old homesteads there are around where I live... I mean old Log Cabins that are falling down. Now, I used to only go those that had other more updated/modern homes on-site so I can ask if I can hunt the old cabin... However, I'd now love to search some of the older homesites that are just off the road, but nobody else around. How far do you think I should go to find the owner before searching? - Should I bother to go through county records first, or ... just hike out to the field and begin if theres nobody obviously around to ask? - Just want to do it right, but don't want to spend weeks trying to find the property owner either ...

First post - sounds like a great resource for my renewed interest in a great hobby, and a great bunch of people. I like your rules.. I belong to several Photography forums, and it can get real nasty..

Thanks for your help..... ;D

My post was not meant to offend you just to ask others how they felt about helping some of the incoming newbies who watched the show and were just out to get what they can. You stated you had a metal detector 15 years ago so I dont consider you a newbie. You know the difference I would assume between someone out to do whatever it takes to make themselves some money and ruin it for the rest of us. Just like the dead beat dads some set out not to take care of their kid others work their butts off but cant catch up with a minimum wage job. Feel free to post your opinion on any of my threads. I value everyones opinion whether I like it or not. Welcome to Tnet and I feel garrett is a better choice and some of the dealers here can really help you out.

Hi Bluehunter... appreciate the reply.

I had originally cringed a little when first read, as I had the impression that some comments were "Generalizing" a little too much, but I do understand your concerns. I wouldn't be too worried about some of the newbies though ... we get them all the time on my Photograhy forums ...... "I've been looking into photography, so I got an expensive camera and now I want to become a professional and shoot weddings" (cringe) - but - those types post a couple times, and then dissapear anyway.. They probably don't understand why they're not getting any replies.. :hello2:

I see you've been around this forum for a half/dozen years, and may be able to help me with my dillema regarding the old homesteads.. Is it an ethical issue if I hop the barb-wire fence and mosy out to an old log cabin if there's nobody around for miles ?? Southern Idaho has an abundance of old log cabins that are possibly ripe for interesting stuff.. as well as an abundance of barb-wire fences..

Thanks again....

Rick

We have a lot of members here into photography there is a daily snapshot forum here at least I think thats what is called. As far as hopping the fence even if nobody is around I wouldnt suggest it. Might take weeks or months but you can track down an owner a get permission. If you take it upon yourself not to ask and he catches you well you might get shot or prosecuted. That would leave a bad taste for people who metal detect in the owner's mouth. Plus I think of it as stealing if you dont. If you do get permission you might find a good friend in the owner and other sites might open up to you and if he owns the old site he can give you stories behind it. This is the only sport where the old saying its easier to ask for forgiveness than permission does not apply. Let me know how it works out.
