Howdy Folks. Like a 70+ year old gal at work says, "Never a dull moment when Kevin's around." Back around the cellar hole sand pit I started digging lots of trash in search of something to call a "keeper". Got some decent finds including a toasted 1909 Lincoln. Of course my cool little brass buckle is hopelessly mangled. I did enjoy the old brass Delmar padlock. I wandered into the field for a spell where I scored the old penny and found a strange and huge brass cartridge. It's a .50+ caliber I believe at over one half inch across. No center fire primer? Never seen one before and I do love the aged patina on it.

Had a dog from the neighboring farm come half way across the field to let me know this was HIS field! LOL! He never came any closer. Sissy! Towards the end of my hunt I opened a deep plug and was pinpointing from one side to the other. I thought I had a huge mess of aluminum foil or grannies aluminum pie pan. I used my hand digger to pull out an enormous German Silver chain link purse! Yeah, I about had a seizure! Not one single coin in the hole as usual and German Silver is NOT silver at all. So I got some cheap thrills and did manage a few keepers. The last photo is my "Post Traumatic Purse Disorder" shock. Back for more fun tomorrow. Thanks for stopping by. Kurios1

Great looking hunt !!!

Great looking hunt !!!

Thanks PPC. You name it, it's probably buried around this place somewhere!:laughing7: Car trim, tractor parts, bullets and casings, iron everywhere, and NO shortage of beer cans and pull tabs! One thing lacking is the coins. Problem might be this place is sand central. The good coins may have sank to China! I still love it here for it's solitude and target rich environment, I could never hope to clean all this mess up in my lifetime but, I'll keep trying.:hello:

IS THAT A COIN PURSE I SEE???????? NICE FINDS

Your 50 cal cartridge looks like a .58 caliber Gatling gun rimfire cartridge. Just my 2 cents worth, but a nice rare find indeed. Congrats on all your finds.

Yes, this is a HUGE chain link German Silver purse. NO change in it!:BangHead: German Silver is composed of copper, nickel, and zinc. AAARRRGGGGHHH!!! Still a nice memory of my near heart failure!:tongue3:

I have NO clue as to what it is. Never seen anything like it. I'll post it in the What Is It section and see if any cartridge folks may have some details. The patina says "I AM OLD"! Thanks for the lead buddy!:icon_thumright:

Cool digs, Kev! I'm loving the old lock...looks really old! So..leave it to the Germans to concoct copper, nickel and zinc...and call it silver...? Lol..so who was the really ugly, creepy looking dude u took a picture of!? Looks shifty, might want to avoid him in the future, just sayin...Ha! Congrats on a good day, I see silver soon for you...keep at it! Ddf

Ha Ha! That's what the gals at work refer to me as, "The Creepy Weirdo!" Sweet! Keeps the passersby away from me while I continue to hoard my precious treasure! LOL! I was actually a bit shocked at the sight of a huge purse in the hole and the thought of gold and silver coins jumping into my pouch! Well, we know how that works. Had a blast. So much fun tomorrow is GAME ON!:headbang:

Dude the car trunk photo is frightening. Is that load from one hunt? The padlock is extremely cool. Congrats!

Fantastic hunt, congratulations! :occasion14:

Sorry if I traumatized ya' buddy. No, that junk is from a few months of hunting I reckon. I'll empty it out and clean it up once the trunk lid will no longer shut.:laughing7:

I hope you never drive off a cliff...with the contents in your truck the investigators wouldn't make sense of anything...
"there was debris from several centuries leading us to the car, where we found Kurious alive. He is not talking, saying he will never give up his sites"?

The lock is the Keeper of The Day,
Congrats on a nice hunt.

I am actually liking the unusual old cartridge brass. Sweet patina on this thing. Still trying to confirm what it is. Another member believes it's a .41 Swiss Vetterli center fire. That round has a "shoulder" on the case where my old round doesn't appear to have a shoulder? The German Silver-(NOT) Purse could have been the find of the day if it contained even a single Indian Head Cent. Ah, the joys and disappointments of pursuing treasure amongst the trash!:hello:

I reckon being a treasure hunter is a "peculiar" passion from the perspective of folks who have never given it a try. If I were to end up in a situation as you suggested I would provide enough material for an entire season of CSI Las Vegas or Miami and they still wouldn't reach a conclusion.:dontknow::icon_scratch:???:tongue3:

Nice catch on the mesh purse, mine was empty as well :(
Oh well it might be a sign of great things yet to come.
Different type of shell also, never seen that type before. Thinking between the pack rivet, shell and other relics your tree 1900.
Best of luck on the next hunt Kevin

as usual, you managed to find some pretty cool finds. yep the cartridge case is very cool and so is the lock. One always hopes to find a purse loaded with the "goods" but I haven't yet, not metal detecting. I have found several wallets etc that I managed to return. We found a purse, stolen by someone at walmart and cast out beside the road down from where I lived. The wallet had been picked thru but had a hidden place and the elderly lady was ecstatic to not only get the purse and wallet back but it still had $200 dollars hidden in it. So the losers got some money but missed the big money.

Just like many of the old pocket watch cases marked Silveroid, Silverine, or Silverode. Same composition but they last forever and come back to life with a good buffing wheel.

Congrats Sir I love old locks but only have managed to find the really small ones.
