An Odd Find..

Hello!

I'm quite new to these forums but just with my brief browsing I've seen quite a few people who hold quite a bit of knowledge about ship wrecks and the tresures they hold. Recently on a trip out to the Dry Tortugas - I was snorkaling and came across a very strange and unique ring. It was encrusted from being on the ocean floor for some time. I'm pretty positive it isnt gold, but the metal looks to be brass or bronze maybe with a bit of copper. The ring is all one poor, and there is no pieces. There is an engraving on the inside of it but I can not tell what it says. The ring itself has a sort of Hellhound wearing a studded helmet. Or I guess it could possibly be a dragon? I'm not exactly quite sure what the creature is but it does look quite sinister. Just from the research I've done online, there has been quite a few wrecks out at the Tortugas, around the spot I was snorkaling. The ring was found in about 8-12 feet of water with it's face down into the sand. I'll post pictures of the ring and post the link so you guys can maybe tell me what you think. Any input and information you could provide for me would be awesome! Thanks!

Ok. I got some of the pictures onto my website. You'll have to excuse the quality - it's the best I can do for now. I'm not really a great photogapher. Though I'll be trying to get some better ones uploaded. Here is a link to the pictures of the ring. Anyone able to tell me anything? Any thoughts? Ideas? Once again any information you guys can provide would be wonderful!

Awsome Looking Ring.

Congrats !

Yeah, definately interested in going back out and seeing if there is anything else that we can possibly turn up. I appreciate the feedback from everyone. If anyone else knows anything about this ring, please let me know. Any thoughts? Ideas? I've been told it looks oriental and has that feel to it. I really dont know what to think - I'm quite a greenhorn in that aspect. Thanks!

I have been looking...Hellhound brings up all kinds of weird .....anyway look toward England for the Hellhound items....If its a gargoyle or some kind of cat...then Gothic ...anyway I am searching....

Sorry, for the slow site. I just picked it up for my wedding that's happening in less than four months. Just a way to make it a little bit easier so would of had low traffic, etc. After I found the ring though I figured I take it down for a few days to put up the pics etc. Anyway, my apologies. Thanks for the help!

Black Hull BM,

Welcome to the forum!

Interesting ring. May be cursed, be careful!

Try using the macro setting on your camera. Most have it for close up pictures, its the little flower. This will give you better close ups for sure. The other is to remember to reduce the dpi of your pictures before posting them to the web. It will help on load times.

Cool ring and let us know if you find something else around the same area.

Thanks for the info! I'll try that and I'll post some new pics pretty soon. I dont really get a chance to go out there alot - though I'll be certain to check the spot again when I do get another opprotunity. I've shown the ring to pretty much everyone around Key West that I would think would have some info on it. No one can really tell me anything. Mostly I get, "Wow! Awesome find!" "This is amazing!" Then they go on and tell me what I've already heard: "It looks oriental." "This has to be a pirates ring!". Though that's pretty much it: I have one more place that I plan on taking it to, hopefully we'll see what that turns up. Once again thanks for all the info guys. I appreciate it..

It looks like a modern fantasy ring from one of the outfits that do re-enactor pageants. There are a number of catalogs that have this stuff. Since you are in Key West, across the street from the oldest house on Duval is a fantasy store with knives, jewelry etc. Take a look at their stuff.
Don't get caught removing artifacts from the Tortugas, it is big time against the law.
E mail me at www.adventurekeywest.com. I have been ID ing artifacts since the 60's and have handled over 250,000 artifacts from the 16th century to the present.

I don't think it is modern. I would put it in a electro tank and clean it. It appears from what I can make out to be Indian or possibly south American in origin. The design are not fluid enough to be Asian. If you can email a better pic I will work on it see if I can find anything on it.
