I think I would check friends and family members. How would a lumber expert know to come in there and check for a hollowed-out two-by-four? His story does not smell right. Actually, sounds like he stole from himself for some reason. "I have no idea, honey. It looks like some lumber expert broke in here and stole the money. I know you think I spent the money drinking and gambling, but that is not the case. I ain't joking."
 

I think The safe was in a Railroad car. or Office...
Somewhere that People had time to Be alone and saw the Screws & Got Curious.
wall boards don't have screws and they may have been fresh ones at that
