I found this small stone today which is unlike any stone I've ever found. I've found stones with natural holes in them before but never anything like this, the hole is perfectly round and centered, the sides of the stone have notches that appear to have been carved as they line up percisely, and the stone is so level on one end that it can stand up straight lengthwise. It is 5.9 grams and measures nearly an inch in length. It looks to have been crafted by intelligent design, perhapse it was crafted by ancient man. It could be part of a tool or a work of art of some kind.

Are you sure that is a rock? Have you placed it next to a magnet? I moved from Today's Finds! over to Forum: What Is It? for more exposure.

I can't put my finger on it, but seems like I have seen these either around the old full service gas stations or on the farm. Seemed like it had to do with rims or valve stems. Again, this was long ago and my memory may be way off, but, I have seen some somewhere. It is not a rock, but metal.

looks like the washer before the wing nut for an old spare tire mount

It is not affected by a magnet and the hole through it is smooth with no signs of threading as would be the case on an old rusted nut. It may simply be a natural occurance, like what some people call a 'seer stone', said to be magic to the people who believe that stuff.

Without the center hole, the stone appears to be a microcrystalline quartz (like Chert) with mineralized coating of manganese oxide (like manganite or pyrolusite) that would include iron oxides. The stone has a creek bottom type water tumbling smoothed/rounded edges.

The hole does not look naturally made. Only a remote possibility of where a fossil piece like Crinoid stem (see attached) has weathered out (dissolved over time).

The overall geometric shape and center hole of the stone makes me wonder if it is not hand picked and the center hole polished. I have heard of such stone used by indians for fish net border weights, and possibly arrow shaft smoothing.

It is a very interesting keeper to me!

Maybe a type of spacer ? The side appears to be made so as to not twist from side to side.

Possibly a highly fossilized vertebra?
