I picked this little medallion up at a yard sale yesterday. I'm hoping someone might know more about it than I do. The couple I got it from just said it was in their granddads stuff. From my research, I 'think' it is a commerative medal given to the Allied soldiers who served in France during WWI. I can't find a direct source of this though, nor can I find a picture of this particular medal online. It's about the size of a US nickle. If you are having a hard time reading it it says: Front-Patience, Effort, Confiance 1914 RF 1918 on the Back- Pour 'l Humanite. I love the art deco image on the back.

would love to know the story behind this medal.

I think I saw this same medal in Western and Eastern treasures magazine...in the "what is it" section.

"PATIENCE.EFFORT.CONFIANCE" & "1914.RF.1918" piece : reverse design : David, holding a sling in his raised right hand, standing over a prostrate Goliath. In the left background the Statue of Liberty piece : reverse text : "POUR L'HUMANITE"
The medal is associated with and for the benefit of the Anti-Tuberculosis Campaign.
Produced in France in 1918; diameter 23 mm.

would love to know the story behind this medal.

Yes, that's the trouble with garage/yard sales. Most people don't keep records between generations. By the same token, some of my best finds are for the same reason. Frequently they would never sell it if they knew what it was.

Mackaydon, can you direct me to your reference?

Mackaydon, Thanks for the link. It's a shame they don't show an image.

Capt-zero, if you requested an image from them, they just may send it.
The reference I gave you also lists the "Catalogue Number Art. IWM MED 767. Reads like a good chance they might also have the image--perhaps even a similar item.

Thanks mackaydon. I'll check it out. When I research I like to cover all the bases.

The "RF" between the dates is probably for "Republique Francaise," just like their coins.

Here's a very similar thread in French. They're saying it's a medal to celebrate the end of the first World War; that it is indeed Clemenceau on the obverse; that it's worth 40€; and that 40€ is quite optimistic given the condition.

Sure wish I read better French.

Google can provide you with a translator program. Just type in "french to english translator"
