An Interesting Curiosity

Hello,does anyone have any idea what this item might be? it was found in an area thats producing great middle 18th to early 19th century artifacts with no modern trash at all.It seems to be a virginal site and I'm looking forward to hitting it again in the spring.this item has me puzzled.it appeard to be brass,and looks like it may have screwed onto something as there are threads in the larger side of the opening in the center.
