We got our first measurable snow the night before last and the scout camp is snowed in for the next few weeks at least so I needed to detect elsewhere this week. I have been reluctant to detect people’s yards with the pandemic. I don’t really have any close contact when I detect yards, but I just didn’t feel right about it. But I needed a change of pace so I bit the bullet and called a guy who had given me permission right before COVID-19 hit. His house was built in 1920 and he has a decent size yard.

I spent 3.5 hours slowly swingin the CZ21 and doing a survey hunt around the yard to see what was there. I was hoping for some silver, but no luck on that one. I did find 46 coins with a face value of $1.34 (39 pennies), a piece of brass utility chain, a heart marked LOGAN, a thunderbird keychain from the Indian Children (this is the second one of these thunderbirds I have found this year), a tire valve stem cover, a little aluminum spoon (MADE IN USA), miscellaneous bits of metal, a few pop tabs and several paint tubes. When I was a kid all paint was oil base and the painter used tubes of color to hand tint the paint for the customer. Every color was one of a kind.

There were 3 wheaties 1942, 1951, and 1953D. And the star of the hunt was a 1903 Indian Head Penny. I have only found 3 IHPs since my year stated in May. The last one was 2 months ago and funny thing, it is a 1903 as well.

Today I went to a state park to work on the beaches. Normally I only do a quick scan of the beach and concentrate on the water in the state parks. Most of the good stuff has come from the water so I don’t spend a lot of time on the beach. Today I figured I would see if I could get lucky and worked one of the beaches. The water is way down so the beach is about 75 feet wider (grass to water). I was not expecting a lot, but you never know. I spent 4.5 hours swingin the ATPro hoping for a small gold and a little change. The targets were as expected, few and far between, and ended up with 19 coins with a face value of $1.21, a cheapy carabiner, sinkers, an earring, a cheapy pendant, 3 small beads, a partial fishing lure, a starter blank, a smoking device, a few tabs and lots of aluminum foil.

The earring was the star of this hunt. I thought it was silver when I dug it out of the frozen sand (there was about an inch of frozen sand on most of the beach until it warmed up an hour later). When I got it home and looked closely I could see it is actually silver with 10k gold plating. It is badly discolored, I have seen this on other 10k jewelry. Technically this item is silver and gold, just not much gold. I found a pair for sale on line and included a picture of what it looked like originally.

I have done 2 other hunts in local parks around the sports fields, but no special finds, just more clad to help with my face value total for the year. The first one was 4 hours long with 71 coins and a face value of $4.36. The second one was only 1 hour with 39 coins with a face value of $3.08.

So the clad continues to pile up, a nice old penny and a little more silver for the year. It’s colder and the digging is a little harder, but I keep on swingin. Thanks for looking, stay safe and may your coil lead you to good things.
