An hour in the park and all I got was this stinkin quarter...

Hit the park's playground area today and found lots of foil, gum wrappers, pull tabs, bottle caps, cigarette packs, and plastic bottles with foil tops, ect, ect, ect... and 1 lousy clad quarter. I started to work the wooded area around the playground and found more of the same plus a page from a transsexual porn mag :o (dont worry I threw it away so no kiddies would find it). The sun was going down and the bugs were coming out so I called it a day. Don't think I'll be going back there anytime soon. Although it leaves me a bit puzzled. I found lots of beer caps, wine cooler foil, beer cans on the ground but no goodies. Obviously adults are there drinking and no telling what else ::) that area gets a lot of traffic, but I didn't get much action. Maybe someone beat me to it...

If you were finding pull tabs and foil then if someone beat you to it, they left any gold that may be there! Keep trying! HH omnicognic 8)

I pick up the cans and trash on top of the ground when I search an area. What I like about doing that is that you can tell if the area has had more traffic since you were last there 8)

Thanks for the tip! I am rather new to MD'ing and had not thought of that.

Yea, I've been there before. I went out to a ball field near my home the other day and only had a dime and a penny to show for 1 1/2 hours work. At least you got out to look.

Be careful digging in the wooded area. Sounds like the kind of spot that you could easily uncover a needle. Be cautious. HH

This just gave me an idea...

After you are done hunting the playground, bury a dime in a spot where anyone with a detector could find it, but anyone without one couldn't. When you go back to the playground a week or two later detect where you left your stash to see if anyone has been there since you left last. I mentioned putting a dime because I know a few guys that won't dig pennies...

That leads me to ask...what's it worth to know if someone is hitting your spots when you aren't around.
10c maybe, but how bout a big juicy washer? :D

Ohh yeah, I don't stick my bare hands in the dirt out there. Not too many yrs back there was a male/prostution sting in that park that netted quite a few people. There was park ranger sitting in the parking lot across from me. Once I knew I wasn't gonna get hassled for "digging up the park" I was glad he was there.

gguff: It could have been worse...It could have been a corroded zinc penny.

First off...Welcome to the Forum, gguff. :)

As for the park, is it old? What was located there before the park?

The secret to great finds it to learn your detector, do research, and then hunt slow & deep.

This is the second time I've seen this said in the forum today. Made me think of a slogan: MD'ers do it slower and go deeper. ;D (No offense to the ladies). HH.

P.S. If at first you don't succeed...move on to another park! We literally have over 200 parks in Omaha (no kidding) and that isn't counting school playgrounds. Some days I hit as many as I can. While some of them barely give up anything, others will pay off well. Average is probably $1 - $2 at each one.

Oh, and you mentioned all the beer cans, I couldn't help but think they must have spent all thier money on beer, which would explain why you only found a quarter. ;D
Anyway, good luck and HH.

Just a curiosity about who has been in your spots in the past. I would probably still hunt the area anyway. Just because they found your dime doesn't mean they found the gold ring by the slides...

I chose a dime because someone will most likely dig it. A penny, they may pass over, a nickel they might think is a pull tab. I would think the majority wouldn't disc out a dime. Who knows though...

Looks like somone already "Cherry picked" the playground for you pal. You'll have to get there earlier next time! ;)

Check your 6, LOL!!! Seriously, I used to hunt some old rental properties in a fairly bad neighborhood. Used to always dig with the sun to my back so I could see a shadow if someone came up behind me!
