[h=2]For the new people...Why we have good ethics rules and what they can earn you![/h]

Our MD club got permission to hunt a fantastic site last October.
Totally historical, in a city that had rules that said no hunting in any of their other public parks, either.
This is a large site with a mansion and other buildings that dated back to the civil war and before, now it is used as a museum, a wedding site and other events throughout the year.
We only had 2 hours to hunt this property and we had to respect it.
Everyone had to dig good plugs, use towels for the dirt and make it all look like nobody had ever been there and considering we had 35 people in attendance and digging holes at this special meeting place we did great.

We got to keep what we wanted, but our prez asked everyone to donate anything cool or unusual for a display he will present back to the historical society that ran the place.
I put in one half of a really old ox shoe and a spark plug from a turn of the century car of some kind.

Recently our prez finally hooked up with one of the people that run the estate and gave the display to her and she was impressed with what we found and even more that we went through the trouble of making up this display and giving it to them.
Somebody else threw in a little sweetheart charm that said Sandy and Bill on it.
Turns out that Sandy was the granddaughter of the housekeeper of the last surviving member of the founder of the estate, so our goal to find something that could be 100% tied to this estate in some way was also met.

We suspect lots of dirt moved around this place in the past, only 2 members found any really old coins and one was a large cent with no date and yours truly found the other...a beautiful 1865 2 cent piece that is the oldest coin in my collection and one of my most cherished finds.
We know there is more...just need more time to find them.

Now 2 other great things came out of this hunt.
We got permission to hold another meeting there and hunt it again, (yea!), and the prez called the parks director of the city and explained what we did, how we did it and mentioned the display we presented and he said as of that moment the city rules were changed and now public parks are all open to hunt in this old city as long as we only use hand diggers and are as careful as we were at that estate.

We get a bad rap sometimes for some of the idiotic things that people do, but once in a while it goes the other way with some good behavior, a little common sense and some good communication with the right people.

Love this hobby...love my MD club!

A big congrats to you and your club. Sometimes doing things the right way ends up paying off big time in the long run.

It is always great to hear stories with good endings.
I have permission to hunt all the local parks but feel it will short lived as I am finding evidence that another hunter is working the same areas. Lots of half covered holes with the old cans still inside. I had one of the local police officers come up to me the other day and I was in an area that I had dug about 10 holes and challenged him to find one. he did do a quick walk around and said he saw nothing. I told him that I was an undetectable detector. That got me a lead to another hunt on private property.
Keep up the good work and happy hunting!

Excellent story that makes me hopeful detectorist will eventually win a place in our localities to practice the art :) Just gotta keep a weather eye out on the fools who give detecting a black eye.
Thanks.

did you say

for the longest time I had one of them and never knew what it was
until some one on here found one

Good job Digger27! Way to do the right thing! I'd like to challenge other MDers; if you see someone behaving badly, try to talk about it to that person. I've had the benefit of a good mentor. Jim Potwardowski is my local Whites dealer. I purchased an MXT Pro through him, and he took me and my 4 year old out for 3.5 hours to show me how to use my machine. How to cut a plug properly, how to clean my clad, how to research; he truly is my "Homie-wan- Kinobie". Others might not have had good mentorship. Talk to people who are doing things wrong, and maybe we can make more places open to this great hobby!!! More good ambassadors for MDing is a good thing!!!

Awesome job to you and your club! way to go. Great to hear these kinds of stories. This is what metal detecting is all about imho. :icon_thumright::thumbsup::notworthy:
