[h=2]For the new people...Why we have good ethics rules and what they can earn you![/h]
Our MD club got permission to hunt a fantastic site last October.
Totally historical, in a city that had rules that said no hunting in any of their other public parks, either.
This is a large site with a mansion and other buildings that dated back to the civil war and before, now it is used as a museum, a wedding site and other events throughout the year.
We only had 2 hours to hunt this property and we had to respect it.
Everyone had to dig good plugs, use towels for the dirt and make it all look like nobody had ever been there and considering we had 35 people in attendance and digging holes at this special meeting place we did great.
We got to keep what we wanted, but our prez asked everyone to donate anything cool or unusual for a display he will present back to the historical society that ran the place.
I put in one half of a really old ox shoe and a spark plug from a turn of the century car of some kind.
Recently our prez finally hooked up with one of the people that run the estate and gave the display to her and she was impressed with what we found and even more that we went through the trouble of making up this display and giving it to them.
Somebody else threw in a little sweetheart charm that said Sandy and Bill on it.
Turns out that Sandy was the granddaughter of the housekeeper of the last surviving member of the founder of the estate, so our goal to find something that could be 100% tied to this estate in some way was also met.
We suspect lots of dirt moved around this place in the past, only 2 members found any really old coins and one was a large cent with no date and yours truly found the other...a beautiful 1865 2 cent piece that is the oldest coin in my collection and one of my most cherished finds.
We know there is more...just need more time to find them.
Now 2 other great things came out of this hunt.
We got permission to hold another meeting there and hunt it again, (yea!), and the prez called the parks director of the city and explained what we did, how we did it and mentioned the display we presented and he said as of that moment the city rules were changed and now public parks are all open to hunt in this old city as long as we only use hand diggers and are as careful as we were at that estate.
We get a bad rap sometimes for some of the idiotic things that people do, but once in a while it goes the other way with some good behavior, a little common sense and some good communication with the right people.
Love this hobby...love my MD club!
