I search most of the time halves and I just look at the edges.

Today I missed (repeat, I missed a Kenn 90% 1964) by just edge searching.

It looked clad 100%.

When I dumped the open roll in my pocket thinking it was just a skunk I heard the silver sound
when the coin hit the other coins. I reached into my pocket again and discovered the 1964 Kenn.

From now on no more just edge searching.

Hope this helps all of you.

How many coins have I missed by doing this?

Re: An end to just edge searching half Dollars

I've done this (found Silver), couple of times when poured the roll of clad from my hand to the Bag- heard as you did the sound of Silver, but in no way would I alter my strategy as time wise it would be quite a consumer to do so. If have still missed a silver (which doubt), then I do not mind leaving one for the really diligent CRH'er who will have earned the Silver on the off chance I missed one. :laughing7:

Figure you do same thing I do though do not use water in my pouring of the clad roll(s) from my hand to the Bag; it does work fine- that sound has a Pavlovian sorta affect on us, no. :icon_sunny:

Re: An end to just edge searching half Dollars

I do what Mojo does, edge search then the drop method. Works every time.

Re: An end to just edge searching half Dollars

I spray mine with helium and put them in a bowl of water, helium sticks to silver and makes them float. HH Mark

Is that where the phrase "Hi Bowl Silver" came from? And all these years I thought it was Hi Ho Silver.

Re: An end to just edge searching half Dollars

I've missed 4 silvers (1 Ben, 1 64, 2 40'ers) in a six month period. They all looked just like clad. How do I know this? Because, luckily the CoinStar machines where I dump reject the silver, so I don't have to be as careful as some of you.

I rim search first, then look at every single date. Doing only a box a week it is easy, doing several boxes in a week can be a
major roadblock.

Re: An end to just edge searching half Dollars

I've found a lot of 40% this year that I'm sure came from someone's dumps. I've always date searched

Re: An end to just edge searching half Dollars

No water involved... lol With a full roll in my left hand after inspecting the edge, I drop "waterfall" them into my right hand listening for silver and looking at the face of each coin as they drop/slide by. Pretty efficient and just mere seconds to do this extra step and them drop the whole roll from my right hand into the bag and again listening for that sound.

On many occasions I have heard silver from across the room and was able to score by suprising the Teller or person who was handling it. Even just poring/sliding the roll out of the paper I can hear them. If you do this long enough there is no denying that sweet sound.

I have been fooled by certain years like for some reason 92's they seem thin. and casino coins, where the reeded edge has been worn flat, change the tune of the coin. No Kidding.

Re: An end to just edge searching half Dollars

I just found 2 40%ers in 5 rolls of cut fed rolls. Seemed very odd 2 me. Finding silver in cut rolls and the fact that there were only 5 rolls in what looked like a dump.
