Had about an hour both yesterday and late this afternoon at two very well pounded sites. What was different this time was that I decided to go ahead and try the GPX 500 at these sites... previously we had hit them hard with Etracs and other VLF machines to the point we sort of gave up on them. I thought perhaps this machine would find a few remaining deep targets.... it did not disappoint, even if I only had an hour at each of site.

Yesterday's hunt produced a trio of buttons.. one being having a nicely gilted back found 10" below the surface.... :)

Today's hunt produced the exciting find of the weekend... My son and I were hunting a site that has to date produced a high concentration of flat buttons, some of which have been military and one was a nice patriotic button... along with some nice coins. This one made the GPX scream being only 4" deep, I don't know how it was missed before now. After finding it and seeing it was a flat cuff button, I jokingly told my son that it had an eagle on it... I flipped it over and much to my surprise it did! :headbang: :hello2:

When it was fresh from the hole, it was easy to see the "E Pluribus Unum" on the scroll above the offset eagle. After getting it home I rinsed it off and can see the United States of America around the edge.... the back says Fine Colour. I only wish it were in a little better shape. :(

So far I haven't found it in Tice's book..... FortBedfordBob is checking out Albert's book.... until we find it anyone have an idea as to when these were used?

Thanks for looking

very nice button! hope ya get an answer soon!

I would say 1830-40 Political/Patriotic Button :icon_thumright: (but ignore me, I'm just guessing based on my experience on here)

Can't find it in Albert's Book. Similar Buttons are listed under "U.S. Official" But not that exact one. Great Button, hopefully someone will know what it is. Early for sure :icon_thumleft:

Don't have my books with me, but something tells me that may be a US Diplomatic button. Very nice recovery!

Yeah with only 17,000 plus posts I'd say you are still a newbie :laughing7:

Seriously, I'd trust your advice though :icon_thumleft:

The date will not be far off, but the use is a best guess :icon_scratch:

The fact that no-one has chimed in yet, makes me think its a real rare one :headbang:

Nice button, I found one quite similar to that and it was an early US Diplomatic button.
Hit that site again and grid it if you can.

Thanks guys for the kind words! :)

It sure looks real close to the first one... some small differences with the spacing of the letters around the edge, but real close. Thanks for passing that on. I only wish mine was in the condition of that one on Ebay! :(

We have been hitting this one off and on for about 3 years. Its in the woods so its hard to hunt except in the fall and spring. And this past summer there was some logging activity so its real hard to hunt now with all of the treetops laying around. Every time we go we always find a few buttons... thankfully a few have been good ones. ;D

Having collected buttons for many years and, having owned a non dug example myself. The button is a Patriotic button, it is mostly attributed to the Jackconian period. It is a nice button to own. Now some Militia units would substitute these patriotic buttons for the uniform buttons. I guess they wanted to be patriotic.

Now if you find the cuff example, which is quite rare and has some value to it.

Your button is on page 459 of Albert's book. It is most definitely an early US patriotic button circa 1830

UU132 Eagle with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM above, 1 piece.
B. Similar device, with E of motto omitted. 15 mm. RV5

I found the same one about a year ago. Nice find!
