It was hot and sunny yesterday, so I hit a local spot for only about an hour, as that’s all I could safely take. The site has lots of farmer walls and gave up a Napoleonic medal a few years ago - see my avatar or prior post: https://www.treasurenet.com/threads/napoleon-victories-of-1807-medal.627183/.
While hits were few, I dug this 1819 Matron right along the dirt road edge. I thought for sure it was going to be a clad quarter based on the tone and VDI. I was just about ready to quit a while later when I found the 1897 S Barber dime in a rocky section. I had brushed some moss and leaves aside to prepare to dig a hole when I saw the dime sitting right on top. That sure was an exciting sight, and I was glad to not have to exert myself any more. One side is “bleached” nearly white after many years of exposure and the other side is dark, but I still like it. This coin had a fairly low mintage in SF that year, and I suspect it was a hunter’s drop. Happy hunting and keep cool.

That Matron is in such great shape! Congrats on your finds! Not often that those old silvers are surface finds! I was lucky enough to find a surface Barber dime once!

Thanks! Old surface finds are rare for me too. Did you post yours on Treasurenet? I was curious if your dime had the same whitening effect on it as mine.

1897-S is a way better find than an 1897 dime with no mintmark! It's a semi-key date with a value of about $30 in G-4. Nice large cent, too - why don't I find any?
Thanks for the comment and info. I was just happy the dime was 1800s; the S mint mark was a bonus. Eastern New York should be a great area for old stuff, including LCs. Good luck!

I probably did but it was a couple years ago and being fairly new I likely didn't know if it looked off.
