I sure hope someone can help me on these two things.

The first one appears to me made of aluminum and appears to have been melted in a mold of some sort as it has distinct sides and a unique bottom. It weighs 7.0 ounces which would be fairly close to right for aluminum for it's approximate volume.

The second item is a lead disc with a diameter of 2 1/2 inches and 1/2 inch thick.

Both of these items were found several years ago in Indiana in an area that was near an old stage coach route. I also found a couple of horseshoes and one three ringer type of bullet in the same vicinity. Any information of these two pieces of metal would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Doug

I'm going to go with a 'pancake' of lead, basically a homemade Lead disc used to carry around until you needed some lead which you could then cut pieces off & make all sorts of objects including musket balls etc..

I went camping last year with a group that melted all the aluminum cans in a cast iron frying pan because it took less room than hauling back a bag of cans. This kind of reminds me of that. As far as the lead who knows. Maybe casting bullets.

Hi turtlefoot13,
I have just got back from a nice relaxing holiday (vacation) and I am catching up with all the news and great finds on Tnet. I have to agree with Cru. It makes sense to me to make your reloads easier to cart around. But if you know of any single women with "distinct sides and a unique bottom" please pm me. :tongue3:

If the first one is aluminum, its not from the same era as the stagecoach stop. Up until around the turn of the century, aluminum was extremely rare and precious. The cap of the Washington Monument is a pyramid of pure aluminum, and it was used because it was such a precious metal at that point; it cost more than silver by weight at that time (1884).

"gris", we need to form a "Victim of First Wives" club forum here on Tnet. There are several that could really tell some horror stories I'll bet. Ditto for the ladies, "First Husbands Club"! Charter Member Monty

The lead disk looks like what we used to make,by melting lead into a snuff can lid.then we would find some hard ground, measure off 20 ft. and cut out a hole in the ground at each end the size of the snuff can. the game was pitching, you used the same rules as horse shoes only you pitched it (the lead disk) in the hole.
