Great couple of hours metal detecting...yes, on Christmas. Just a couple of hours with an inch of snow on the ground and people running around the kitchen setting up Christmas dinner (yes, I brought the chairs up and moved everything around). Love my wife; she wanted me out of the house. Anyway, in addition to a 1962-D Roosevelt dime, War Nickel, and a couple Wheatbacks, got this piece of jewelry that I think is an amulet. It probably dates to about 1968 based on other items I've pulled from the older schoolyard. Near the top, the design is asymmetrical; two "8s" with two other characters in-between. The word "sterling" in worn and located on the back toward the bottom (not visible in photos). I know next-to-nothing concerning amulets; any information would appreciated, especially things I should look for.

It's Judaica (Jewish) silver. Notice the Star of David on the back. Nice, interesting find especially interesting considering it is Chistmas! Congrats!

It is a Mezuzah pendant. Like the ones at this site. it should have a scroll inside which contains the ten commandments. Do not take the scroll out. They are worn for protection and good and
as a blessing. Traditionaly Mezuzah's are put on the outside of the front door of Jewish homes. However, in current times people have taken to wearing them.

Thank you very much for the information...I am honored this Christmas evening. Any scroll that may have been inside has long since gone, and the "Sterling" written on the back is well worn; this piece shall not go to silver melt. It's one of my favorite finds ever.
