Ammo Help Needed

Hello All. I found this empty shell casing at an old RR siding. Looks like a large rifle round to me.

The base is ~7/16-IN and the business end is ~1/2-IN in diameter. There are three dots on the stamp end that almost appear to be stars but no other markings.

Maybe take it to a gun store and see if they can tell you the caliber. May make it easier to google the headstamps for a particuar caliber

They came out in 1876 but were probably made into the early 20th century, like a lot of other ammo from that time period. That one, without a headstamp, means its probably very old. 1880s or before would be my guess.

I am guessing this is a pretty old cartridge? You know your bullets it appears.:icon_thumleft:

When other kids were studying baseball stats I was memorizing ballistic tables.
