Hello to all,

I am new to treasurenet so please bear with me. A friend of mine who frequents this website told me about this forum. I was hoping that someone here would be knowledgeable enough to help me.

My grandfather who fought in a Cavalry division in World War II based in the Philippines had brought home a small purse of coins that he had saved while overseas. Recently, now that he's passed away, I was given the opportunity to go through those coins and found this coin with San Francisco mint. It has very little wear for its age but was only struck on one side. I'm very curious what you can tell me about this coin and what it is worth, if anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On a side note, I have a bicentennial US Quarter with a cud on the face side about 1/8 in. I have been carrying this quarter around for over 30 years, and thought what the heck I might as well see what it's worth. Any ideas?

Thank you all in advance and I look forward to hearing what you think.

Ben

The coin pictured is damaged. Someone grounded down the surface. Would need to see a picture of the other coin. Welcome to the forum!

Welcome from Texas

Wouldn't the coin be thinner if ground and not appear thicker? Is there a way to verify if it truly was ground?

Try weighing the coin, and comparing it to the standard weight for a wartime Five Centavos (4.9200 g). If it's ground down it will be lighter.

Thanks! Will do when I get home and will get back.

1944 US Phillipines 50 centavo

Thanks! Will do when I get home and will get back.

Well I finally got around to measuring its width (27.62mm) thickness (1.7mm) and weight (8.9g). Pretty bummed as you can see, it must have been a ground 50 centavo.
