Hi tnet. I did a quick hunt in a yard where the house was built in 1891. I found a 1918 wheat penny and also a strange American legion either pin or button. In the pic you can see there may have been a small circle inlay in the middle... The 'pin' part is threaded and the backing screws on. On the back of the pin/button it says: PAT.DE.54296 and of course you can see the 'American legion' on the front. does anyone have any info on this find for me? Approximate date? The wheat is for size comparison.

The American Legion is a veterans organisation, formed in 1919. Your find looks like part of an American Legion pin. All pins have, "PAT.DE.54296' on the back. They made the tie tacks/pins in 1919, and they have continued making them, and they still make them today.

I can't help you with year of manufacture, but I'm a member and you have a lapel pin with the center part missing.
