Hey all, I have a tough one that means alot. I hunted on Italian soil for almost 3 years when I first started in this great hobby and in the midst of my many searches I found a WWII dog tag from an American. It sent chills down my spine when I found it and over the years I have tried to track this individual down but have had little luck. Is there anyone that has geneology access to track him down so I can return it to him or at least to his wife or kids as a war momento? This is his info:

Ernest R. Palmer service number: 35744407
T-42-43 O

In my search I saw that he was 17 when enlisted and served five years. He was white, married and an engraver. He enlisted in Clarksburg, WV. He may still be alive and would love to hear what happened to cause him to lose his tag on the mountainside where I found it. Also, being a veteran of 21 years in the Navy I want this returned to this veteran after his service to his country. Any help from you all would be greatly appreciated to finally get this back to him.

Thanks to all....

You may have already seen this:

Also, have you tried the local VFW post or asked his hometown library for a geneology staffer who might assist you. Maybe the Clarksburg paper has an archivist who could assist you. Another source: Check out Palmer's Clarksburg High School's 50th class Reunion attendees and see if they know anything.
Hope you find his kin; it would be a profound 'closure'.

I wish you all the luck in finding him or a relative. My dad was a WWII vet and I have a copy of his military record and would be thrilled to have one of his old dog tags. Monty

Monty's comment triggered additional suggestions: Place a notice in the local Clarksburg newspaper requesting information on Palmer; also in their local Craig's List. The fact that he was listed as being a local 'engraver' may also be a good lead. Lastly, the town has a pop. of < 20k people; you might try calling one or two Palmers and ask them for assistance based on the find and your desire to return the tags.
Please keep us posted.

Post this on Today's Finds too. I just found out who the Veteran was for a pair of WW-1 dog tags I had found in 1994 through help from some folks on Tnet. You can see my post there, under WW-1 Tags Found, RETURNED. There are some great people with alot of knowledge on how to track people down. Good luck, Bryan

Hey, I just did a quick search on yahoo people search. There is an Ernest R. Palmer who is at RR2, Moundsville, WV. His relatives are CM Palmer, Charlotte Palmer and Maxine Palmer. No phone number is listed.

Here is what I got for Moundsville Palmers:

Chris, I just made some calls and here is what I found. First I called Carl Palmer in Moundsville. He knew an Ernest R. Palmer who lived down the street from Carl. The Ernest R. he knew died 10 to 15 years ago. (Perhaps there is a way to search obituaries to see if he served in WW-II). Carl told me that Ernest worked in the undertaker business in Pine Grove. I searched for Palmers in Pine Grove and called David Palmer. He is the son of Harry Palmer who owned the funeral home there. David said he does not know an Ernest Palmer. He is going to call his Mom and call me back to see if she has heard of Ernest R. Palmer or one of his relatives. It may be a wild goose chase but we will see. If I can find a relative, I will give you the info for contact info so these tags can get to a relative. Bryan

Oh, forgot to say, the "T" stands for tetanus shot and the dates he had them. Since being wounded was a distinct possibility they always kept their tetanus shots up to date and the "O" is his blood type. You probably already knew this but I'm sure many didn't. Monty
