This came from the woods near an old elementary school. The area used to be part of the playground in the 50's but is now grown up. Near this mystery item were wheat pennies,a Buffalo nickel, pencil parts etc. so i figure it must have been in some kid's pocket at one time. It is like a large amber marble set in to some sort of copper casing. There are no markings that i can find. Thanks in advance for ANY input on this one,i hope this doesn't turn in to one of those "found in a football field what is it?" posts. I'll re-bury it and pretend it didn't happen ;D

Maybe some part to a light assembly, directing and focusing the light through the marble??
I don't know...

Where this was found near a school yard...When I first looked at it, it reminded me of one of those bubbles that they would encase an insect or plant in for the kids to study. Just a thought.

Let me throw out another idea. In Nashville many of the old buildings had frieght elevators that rose into the sidewalk (as did most cities). Usually where there was a frieght elevator there would be one or two large square inserts in the sidewalk encases with numerous domed glass balls that would allow natural light to the area below. I've seen both clear and amber ones.
