Recently I had a day off and decided to go beeping near an old school site(building long gone). As it was way out in the woods, I thought I would have a peaceful afternoon by myself. However, upon arriving I noticed another car parked along the side of the road. I quickly saw an older gentleman detecting at one of my favorite sites with an odd looking detector.
The man was quite surprised to see me and was about to leave but not before I asked him about his odd looking detector. He confessed that he was testing the latest technology a "VLF/GPR" hybrid. Well I know what VLF stands for but does "GPR" mean?
He then showed me how this "VLF/GPR" machine worked. He turned on a switch and a large round illuminated screen sprang to life. When you moved the coil over the ground you could see the shape of metal objects in the ground on this screen.
While I was there he detected 3 seated dimes from 12" to 16" deep. These appeared as small round objects on the screen and below the object was the depth in centimeters. He said that he does not use the VLF but just the screen and when he sees small round objects on the screen -he digs.
I asked him why is the depth given in centimeters? He replied that this detector was developed by a German company and they don't use inches.
He asked me to keep this confidential until the German company releases the detector in 3 months. I said sure as long as you give me the name of that German company so I can buy one when it is released.
He said OK- the name of the company is Lirpa Loof
